Rare Find
Pre-owned Authentic Full set Cartier Free As A Bird diamond necklace crafted in 18K white gold, featuring a sculpted bird poised within an openwork cage motif set with brilliant-cut diamonds.
The origins of this design trace back to 1942, during the German occupation of Paris in World War II. At the time, many Parisians referred to themselves as “birds in a cage.” Jeanne Toussaint, then Director of Fine Jewellery at Cartier, created a brooch depicting a caged bird to symbolise occupied France.
In 1944, following the liberation of France, a revised version of the brooch appeared in Cartier’s Paris window. This new design featured an open cage door, with the bird poised to take flight, representing freedom, resilience, and renewal.
This modern interpretation, created in the early 2000s, revisits that historic and symbolic design. While reimagined with contemporary craftsmanship, it retains the powerful narrative of liberation that defines the original creation.
Elegant yet deeply meaningful, the piece stands not only as a finely executed diamond piece but also as a tribute to a defining moment in French history and in Cartier’s artistic legacy.
