Pre-owned Victorian Snake Necklace
An exquisite Victorian necklace designed as a snake holding a heart-shaped pendant. The body of the snake crafted from 15 karat gold links which articulate in a wonderfully snake-like way. The links themselves are rounded, which makes the necklace very comfortable to wear. These graduate in size down to the clasp at the tail. The clasp then clips into the side of the head, which is intricately carved with an intertwining foliate design.
The mouth is open, showing teeth, and holding the loop from which hangs the heart-shaped red garnet pendant with engraved gold surround. The head and neck of the snake also crafted from alluring red garnet. The garnet commanding attention with its depth of colour and ever-changing depth. The eyes and nose decorated with rose cut diamonds, providing extra style and added sparkle.
The snake shown biting its own tail making this an ouroboros. This was a very popular theme in Victorian jewellery symbolising renewal, rebirth and the never-ending cycle of nature. The idea of the infinite is reinforced by the infinity loop surrounding the heart pendant.
The necklace comes in a fitted box from Rood of Burlington Arcade. The outside of the box is embossed "Hilary from Father, 1928". Despite the date on the box, the design, materials, and workmanship are all typically Victorian.
