Loewe Collection

The Beginnings: From a Leather Workshop to a Fashion Empire

Loewe’s story dates back to 1846 in Madrid, Spain, when a group of Spanish artisans established a leather goods workshop specialising in high-quality handcrafted products. In 1872, a German craftsman, Enrique Loewe Roessberg, joined the atelier and quickly transformed it into a renowned luxury leather brand. By 1892, Loewe had become the preferred leather goods supplier for Madrid’s elite, solidifying its reputation for exceptional quality and timeless design.

In 1905, Loewe was granted the prestigious title of "Supplier to the Spanish Royal Court" by King Alfonso XIII, further cementing its status as Spain’s most luxurious fashion house. Throughout the early 20th century, the brand expanded, opening flagship stores in Madrid and Barcelona, attracting European aristocracy and fashion connoisseurs alike.

Celebrities such as Ernest Hemingway; an American novelist, short-story writer and journalist, Sophia Loren, Rita Hayworth and Marlene Dietrich were among Loewe’s frequent customers.

Loewe’s Global Expansion & Ready-to-Wear Evolution

While Loewe was originally known for its exquisite leather craftsmanship, the brand expanded into ready-to-wear fashion in the 1970s, marking a new chapter in its history. Under the creative direction of Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani, and Narciso Rodriguez, Loewe evolved beyond leather goods, embracing modern silhouettes and contemporary elegance.

In 1996, Loewe became part of the LVMH Group (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), allowing it to grow internationally while maintaining its heritage and artisanal roots. This acquisition positioned Loewe alongside some of the world's most prestigious luxury brands, leading to a revitalisation of its brand identity and global appeal.

The Jonathan Anderson Era: A Modern Renaissance

Loewe’s true transformation came in 2013 with the appointment of Jonathan Anderson as Creative Director. Under his visionary leadership, the brand has become a leader in modern luxury, blending avant-garde aesthetics with traditional Spanish craftsmanship. Anderson reintroduced Loewe to a younger audience while staying true to its heritage of exceptional leatherwork.
